[ That's all Mako gets before he can hear feet thundering down the stairs. Fritter proceeds Wu, skidding on the tile floor of the kitchen and leaping onto the counter, then onto Mako's shoulder, snuffling his ear.
Wu laughs when he sees her, jogging after her. He slows down but walks to Mako's other side, kissing his other cheek softly. ]
Smells great!
[ And now he's looking for a plate to steal one with... ]
[ At least Mako was prepared by all the noise and by a lifetime of living with Bolin and then Pabu. The little cling of paws and claws to his clothes isn't even alarming, even though the double-kisses have warmth blooming unbidden in his belly. He turns just a bit, leaning into the press of his lips before he pulls away. ]
So I'm guessing you're not interested in cabbage pancakes. On your left, I moved them higher so Fritter couldn't pull them down again.
[ Mako says, only half looking as he smoothly flips one of the pancakes. Fritter reaches out a little paw and he nudges her back with his shoulder. ]
Don't you dare. I know you already got fed, and you probably got treats because Wu's a pushover.
[ Wu huffs it out even as he takes a pancake from the stack and puts it on his own plate, leaning against the counter. His eyes flick over Mako. Things have been better, a lot better, but it's still not perfect.
But Mako is trying to be more present with him, and Wu is trying to be more honest with him.
Speaking of honestly, he groans when he takes a bite ]
[ It's said with the utmost affection. His voice is practically brimming with it, even though Fritter is actively attempting to steal a pancake at this very moment.
He even leans over to grab Wu some chopsticks once he flips the latest pancake onto the pile. ]
You know the cabbage pancakes aren't gonna come free, right?
[ Okay, Wu makes a fair point there. Mako spares a moment to shudder about it as he leans back from the stove to keep Fritter from crawling onto its hot surface. ]
I think you can do better. You're a really good baker, now. Cooking's not that different.
[ Bless you, Wu. Fritter gives the pancake a suspicious look, her ears flattening for a moment, before she leaps from Mako's shoulder to the counter, her claws skidding a bit on the stone, so she can scamper over to Wu for her treat.
Mako just snorts. ]
You see what I mean? Spoiled. And I'm not terrible at baking. Come on, you have to learn to flip things, it's not that hard.
[ Wu shoots him another annoyed look, snatching the spatula away from him.
He stares down at the pancake, then carefully slides the spatula under it. It comes up easily, and he gets the spatula under most of it, picking it up off the pan. He flips it over and it lands awkwardly half on the side of the pan.
He looks back up at Mako, raising an eyebrow. ]
Sure. This is so much better than you just doing this.
[ How it's supposed to feel, huh? Wu glances up at him, his cheeks flushing at the feeling of Mako's broad chest against his back. He smells good, musky and heady and Wu shudders a little.
He blinks when Mako starts to move their hands together. ]
Uh-- what? What are we--
[ Oh, right. Pancakes. This is about pancakes. Not about wanting to make out with his boyfriend in the middle of the kitchen ]
[ Mako wasn't intentionally pushing himself up against Wu's back but that little flush is telling enough, and now he's noticing it. Wu fits nicely in front of him like this, lets himself be guided through the motion of flipping the pancake back over so easily.
A little frisson of heat darts along Mako's spine.
Pancakes. Wu wanted to learn to cook. Focus, Mako. He curls his fingers a little more tightly around Wu's hand, his thumb pressed to the soft skin inside Wu's wrist, his mouth close to the shell of Wu's ear. ]
You just have to be confident with it. Not flip it onto my face confident, but. You know. Somewhere in the middle.
[ Did Wu want to learn to cook though? Did he? Really? Because he just wanted a snack thankyouverymuch.
But now Mako is against his back and it's a lot more than flipping pancakes. He tries to get himself to concentrate, staring down at the pan even as Mako's voice shivers through him. He shoves an elbow back into Mako's ribs, pouting ]
[ At some point, Mako is certain, Wu wanted to learn to cook. Or maybe Mako just decided he should know because it's a basic life skill and Wu's not a king so now he has to do that. It's learn to cook, and then learn to make a bed.
Baby steps.
Anyway now it's a lot less about the pancake and a lot more about— ]
Sweetcheeks?
[ His voice is a strange combination between incredulous and on the verge of laughter. ]
[ Wu hadn't even meant to say it, the term just slipped out. The indignation on Mako's face makes it worth it. Wu bites his lip against a smile. He leans up with his free hand to squeeze Mako's cheek ]

She's smart. She just doesn't know what to do with all her energy!!
Thanks! She's getting better. She comes when she calls at least half the time now. You should try it!
no subject
At least half the time, huh? That's real progress.
[ Is he teasing? Is he serious? WHO KNOWS. ]

What do you mean? I thought you said "money is meaningless now, Wu," just last week!
[ Fritter is slowly reaching down to steal some of the batter. ]

[ Without even blinking, Mako grabs the bowl to pour another cabbage pancake into the skillet, keeping it from Fritter's reach. ]
And I stand by that. But I think you should give flipping pancakes another shot, so that's your payment. Help me finish these.

[ Last time had been an unmitigated disaster, with batter burning onto the stove, and Mako with a face full of it. ]

You're just trying to get out of flipping, aren't you?

[ Mako just rolls his eyes at Fritter, chittering contentedly to herself. ]
You know. Lend a hand. Equal participation.

Okay. Fine.
[ He finishes off the pancake and turns to face the stove. ]
Show me then, big guy.

He flashes Wu a grin and holds out the spatula in something like victory. ]
Don't fling it at the ceiling. It should just be ready to come up.

But no. Wu has called him a terrible teacher more than once and he is trying to get better, which means no laughing when your pupil fucks up.
Maybe just leaning over to kiss his cheek, actually, and then slotting in behind Wu and reaching to curl a hand around Wu's on the spatula. ]
You're flipping it like you're scared of it. C'mon, we'll flip it back, I'll show you how it's supposed to feel.

Not at all [ fuck think of a nickname why is this hard ] honey-wolfbear.

Honey-wolfbear?! Sweetcheeks, you can do better than that!
[ He twists around, arms sliding around Mako's shoulders ]
Do I really look like a honey-wolfbear to you?
